Apocynum Venetum(AV) fiber can be used in textile and papermaking, is the best one in which are already discovered. AV fiber not only has been proved it has excellent fabric properties, but also been acknowledged to its antibacterial anti-mold action. The root and leaf of AV have been certified their medicine value. At present, some scholars have studied and been studying AV fiber in enzymatic degumming processing, physical and chemical properties and textile processing. Recently, the bacteriostasis of AV has come into some scholars' notice. So, it is necessary for us to study the AV fibers' bacteriostasis properties. This study is based on the AV fibers' bacteriostasis properties, is to separate the AV compositions by silica gel column chromatography, gel chromatography, polyamide chromatography, thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and HPLC. Make full use of the advanced chromatography and their coupled analysis technology, modern chromatographic separation technology and spectrum characterization technique to identify the compositions of AV. That will be the a significant proof of bast fiber's bacteriostasis. Then, the total flavone content of Apocynum venetum extract and Apocynum venetum fiber extract were evalusted by ultraviolet and visible spectrophotometer. The results were 0.993% and 0.017%. The bacteriostatic activity of the two materials were tested via testing the bacteriostasis effect of their aqueous extract, acet extract and butyl alcohol extract. The strains is staphylococcus aureus, bacillus subtilis, pseudomonadaceae, pseudomonas aeruginosa, staphylococcus epidermidis, escherichia coli and candida albicans. The results proved that AV extract at 100mg/ml has different effect on these bacteria, and has acet extract and butyl alcohol extract and bacillus subtilis. Their acet extract and butyl alcohol extract also have acet extract and butyl alcohol extract, however, their aqueous extract has a little even no effect on these bacteria. In addition, we have HPLC to assay the content of flavonoids (including rutin, quercetin, hyperoside and isoquercetin) in the AV extract and AV fiber extract and their ethyl acetate extract, n-butyl alcohol extract. The test proved these flavonoids content in AV was much more than those in AV fiber. Hovever, after extrction via acetic ether and n-butyl alcohol, their flavonoids content increace. The results as proofs are significant in certifying AV bacteriostatic activity.
