In this thesis, the understanding of 20 to 30 years old consumers on the fabric softness was investigated.87 kinds of fabrics had been collected and the fabric low stress mechanical properties, such as pure bending, surface, compression, tensile and shear property were measured by using KES.In order to know the consumers' understanding on the fabric softness, a survey was conducted. The results showed that most of the consumers considered that the fabric hand was important and the softness was impotant for fabric hand. The results also showed that most of the consumers thought there were obvious difference between "rou" and "ruan" and most of the consumers thought they could distingusih five levels in evaluating fabric softness.Based on this findings,20 subjects evaluated the softness of 87 fabrics in two experimental conditions:blindfolded condition and ordinary condition. In the subjective experiment, the feeling of "rou" and "ruan" on these fabrics was also evaluated. The results of Pearson cooperation coefficient test showed that the results of the 20 subjects were effective and followed the same evaluation criterion. Paired-samplest test was carried out to analyze the relationship between the subjective evaluation results of the male subjects and the female subjects. The reasults showed that there was difference between the subjective evaluation results of the male subjects and the female subjects on fabric softness and the fabric softness values given by the male subjects were higher than those given by the female subjects. Correlation analysis was also carried out. The reasults showed that there was stronger correlationship between the subjective evaluation results given by the male subjects and those given by all the subjects when the subjects were blindfolded, while there was stronger correlationship between the subjective evaluation results given by the female subjects and those given by all the subjects when the subjects were not blindfolded. And the results of correlation analysis on the resulsts of subjective evaluation showed that the subjects could not distinguish "rou", "ruan" and softness in the real fabric hand subjective test. The fabric softness was subjectively evaluated according to different end use and the results were analyzed by using paired-sample t test. The results showed that there were difference between the subjective evaluate results for different end uses. The results suggested that the subjects had the highest demand on fabric softness for shirting fabrics, lower demand on fabric softness for trausering fabrics and the lowest demand on fabric softness for sports wear fabrics. At last, correlation analysis was carried out to analyze the relationship between the fabric softness and their low stress mechanicl properties. It was found that there were significant correlationship between the fabric softness and some low stress mechanicl properties. Principal component was used to reduce the dimension of relational low stress mechanicl properties. Finally, regression equation was obtained by using regression analysis to the fabric softness and their low stress mechanicl properties.
