Establishing fabric performance prediction system is an urgent problem to solve for apparel, textile manufacture and design. If the static and dynamic behavior of the fabric can be seen or predicted by computer, it would not only greatly improve the efficiency in design and development of garment or textile products, but also contribute to mass customization clothing. Simulating fabric deformation is the key technology of predicting fabric performance. Recently, in order to more accurately simulate the real fabric deformation behavior, people have done a lot of research in fabric model, collision detection and response, integration method and model parameterization, but the results are not satisfactory, especially model parameterization. The purpose of this paper is to work out a more reasonable method of model parameterization making the fabric model reflect actual performance of the fabric, in order to make the movement of fabric model closer to the real movement of fabric. This paper, at first studies how to connect the performance of real fabric with the model parameters, that is to derive mechanical formulas of springs in the model by experimental data from KES testing, and gives a specific formulas. The formulas between deformation and forces of three springs are based on the experimental data, so the spring performance can express the mechanical properties of real fabric. Next, unreasonable parts of the formula are amended. According to real performance of stretch, shear and bending forces, the time three spring force exist are limited to avoid distortion caused by the formula. Then, this paper chooses five representative fabrics, simulates their static draping appearances and flapping behaviors in the wind, and verifies the feasibility of the proposed model parameterization by comparing with actual behavior of fabrics.Under Visual C++6.0 programming environment and with OpenGL technology, by which build simulation environment, draw fabric, add lighting function and multi-angle observation function, the fabric simulation is presented in the program. Finally, based on the above study, this paper builds a skirt model to simulate five skirts made by different fabrics. This provides the foundation for further study, applying the research result in practice.
