| Grinding with abrasive is the basic manufacturing and processing in industry and electronics markets, which is important especially for optical products etc. 3M company invented the first waterproof sandpaper in 1921, continued to provide the improved products and solutions for industrial and electronics markets till now. The micro-replication abrasive products were invented by 3M in the 1990's basing on the micro-replication technology platform. Micro-replication abrasive products is the patented products for 3M company, the structure shows many same micro-cell is arrayed on the substrate backing, and the abrasive materials such as alumina, silicon carbide, diamond etc are embedded inside each micro-cell structure. Comparing with the traditional coated abrasive products, the abrasive products with micro-replication structure have some of advantages such as longer life, more consistent removal rate and more uniform surface quality. In this paper, we studied micro-replication diamond lapping film applications on ceramic fiber optical and touch screen glass. Determining the optimization of grinding parameters for fiber optical with diamond lapping film through a series of design of experiments, and the performance of removal rate and lifetime between micro-replication diamond lapping film and the normal coated abrasive film are also compared. We investigated the correlation between the down force and grinding quality and the pad break-in and self sharpness of micro-replication diamond lapping film. In addition, this paper also studied the application on touch screen glass with micro-replication abrasive calls Trizact Diamond Tile (TDT), the glass materials are from soda-lime glass and Corning Glass. We studied the features for removal rate and glass roughness after grinding with TDT, and also figure out the effects of grinding down force and rotation speed. The glass surface &subsurface damage and roughness lapped by different grade of TDT were also studied. The research could help to deeply understand of the characteristics on micro-replication abrasive so that we can better use them in the electronics industry for precision grinding. |
