Today, more and more fluctuant loads such as electric arc furnaces, rolling mills, winches and welding machines are connected into electric networks, which causes the fluctuation and flicker of voltage, the imbalance of three-phase power supply and some other problems of electric quality. SVC due to its advantage of rapid, continuous and independent control of three-phase reactive power has become the best choice of reactive power compensator in power system supplying fluctuating loads.This paper, on the background of the practical application of static var compensator at home and abroad, setting out from the practical necessity for static var compensator in electric power, metallurgy, coal, chemical industry and electric railways at present, researches and develops a static var compensator based on Magnetically-controlled reactor, which is called MSVC for short below. The paper introduces the theoretical principle of MSVC and magnetically-controlled reactor, designs the framework of MSVC integrally, designs in detail the relay system configuration of magnetically-controlled reactor, the control system, the excitation system in MSVC. It establishes the simulation model and does simulation analysis, using the PSB model sets for power system in the Simulink tool box of Matlab software. It also analyses the three types of MSVC's practical application, which are the simple MSVC using MCR and FC, the filtering MSVC using MCR and PF, the practical MSVC using MCR and MSC. Aiming at three cases studies in different industry, the paper analyses the operating datas, presents prioritization scheme and measures improvement effects to make the MSVC meet all the needs of all related industries. It has been found that, the MSVC is a SVC which has high reliability, simple construction and superior performance.
