The number of Electric Multiple Units (EMU) continuously increases under the fast development of high-speed railways and passenger special lines. Whether in railway stations, servicing points or storage yards of EMU, the number of fire accidents has been increasing; due to incompleteness of firefighting facilities and inadequate on-site disposals, many firefightings were not timely, which brought huge losses of state property.The storage yard of EMU in Chengdu will be built in large scale as a typical case, thus it is vital to carry out scientific research and employ a reasonable design of an effective fire system before the construction, which is necessary to prevent and dampen the fire hazard, and to protect people's lives and state property.By extensive investigations, this paper reviewed many cases of fire accidents and fire system designs in domestic and foreign storage yards. Following the current national standards of fire protection and industry standards of railway systems, the deployment of fire system for the storage yard of EMU in Chengdu was planned by theoretical analysis, scientific design, numerical simulations, simulation experiments and engineering analogies. Specifically, the design included temporary high pressure fire hydrant systems outdoors, fire hose systems, joint control systems, conventional firefighting equipments and infrastructures. Specifications were given on the classification, quantity and key parameters for the fire system. Emergency plans of fire accidents in the yard were made. Regulations of fire management and safety usage were drafted.
