With the development of railway rolling stock towards to high speed and heavy haul, the safety and reliability of its key structures is becoming concerned. By interference fit, wheelset is made of axle and wheels. The full weight of vehicle impose on the rail through wheelset, so the wheelset plays key role while vehicle is running. The structural behavior of wheelset directly influents the running safety and reliability of vehicle. In developing high speed passenger cars, we should pay special attention to the problem of the wheelset strength. Therefore, in the design phase the strength analysis and testing evaluation should be made. In this paper, theoretical strength analysis of the high speed passenger car wheelset was carried out, it is practical to do these research.Firstly, this paper introduced the development of high speed passenger car, and the current strength research status of wheelset were overveiwed. The basic principle of the finite-element method was discussed, the comparisons of different commercial finite element software were made, and finally the ANSYS software was selected to analyze the wheel strength. Then its detailed functions were introduced. The importance of structure strength analysis of vehicle was recognized, and the current strength analysis methods used internationally for axle and wheel were discussed. Based on the finite element technique, the method stated in UIC510-5《Technical Approval of Solid Wheels》was used to carry out the strength analysis for wheel web of high speed passenger car; Based on the material mechanics, the method stated in European standards EN13103-2002《Railway applications—Wheel sets and wheel sets—Non-powered axles—Design method》was used to carry out the strength analysis for axle.Based on the standard UIC510-5, the calculating load cases for wheel web fatigue strength analysis were determined, the running condition of wheel was simulated by using the finite element method, and the evaluating of wheel static strength and fatigue strength were made. This paper use maximum principal stress method to translate multiaxial stress state to uniaxial stress state. According to the Haigh-Goodman fatigue limit diagram, it is showed that the fatigue strength of high speed passenger car wheel web satisfy the design requirements under the mechanical loads. According to the European EN13103 standard, the strength assess of axle was made. Under the action of vertical load, longitudinal bending moment and torque, the stresses value and fatigue safety factors for dangerous section on the axle were calculated. The analysis results show that the strength of the axle satisfy the allowable stress requirements.
