With the development of technology, a number of components with complex or free surface have been appeared. If these components fail because of abrasion, fracture and corrosion, the whole machine cannot works normally. If the failed component have complex or free surface, it is very difficult or complicated in procession for the traditional methods to repair this kind of failed component. This makes a great waste. This paper focuses on using data collection technology of Reverse Engineering, combine with the Rapid Prototyping Technology, trying to provide a new method of failed component repairing. This study includes the following respect:1) Determine the overall program and the appliance range of failed component repairing with Reverse Engineering.2) Analysis the differences of surface digital collection between failed component and normal Reverse Engineering, proposed the particular way of failed component's surface digital collection.3) By measurement the surface of failed component, comparison between the original CAD model and point cloud of failed component, we can quickly get the digital model of parts defect site. In specific comparison methods, this paper proposed two kind of way to get the digital model of component's defect site:point cloud comparison and entity comparison.4) According to the different component materials, we should select different types of RP method to repair and according to various technical characteristics of RP technology, we can divided the failed component's repairing methods into two categories:direct repairing and indirect repairing.By using two component's repairing instances we authentication the feasibility and practical application of combining the reverse engineering and the rapid prototyping to repair complex surface component.
