Neil Leach declared that digital morphogenesis is a paradigm shift in his 2009 essay Digital morphogenesis. His argument mentioned little of the architect's role in this process. This research investigates how the architect's involvement in digital morphogenesis affects Leach's definition of it as a paradigm shift. Through case studies and comparative literature analysis, also added with another's own practice experiences during design project process; this study finds the architect to be a critical decision maker in digital morphogenesis. Digital morphogenesis is found to be primarily limited to structural and environmental problems, requiring the architect to employ a normative design process on the rest of the project. The architect must also subjectively guide digital morphogenesis. The study finds Leach oversells digital morphogenesis, which will remain a design tool used by architects on niche problems.
