Safety of bridges not only influences normal and regular development of national projects, such as society, politics, economy, national defense and so on, but also influences security of people's lives and possessions. However, many factors affect the safety and health of bridges, such as wind, earthquake, overload, material aging, unreasonable management and so on. In recent years, many bridges collapsed all around the world, which absorbs high attention from governments and media.Bridge structural health monitoring(BSHM), which real-time monitors the healthy situation of bridges'structure, providing scientific data for bridges'management, maintenance and repair by monitoring structural response and environment condition, started in 80s last century. Nevertheless, BSHM technology is still in an early phase, and a few BSHM systems are installed in some large-scale bridges nowadays. Bridges all tend to be installed BSHM systems in the futures, which is an research priority in the civil engineering.Presently the methods used in BSHM always needs high cost. These methods are short of monitoring method and cannot satisfy the requirements of real-time monitoring. To solve these problems, Chongqing jiaotong university invented a set of BSHM system, which was installed on Tai-pingzhuang bridge and to realize long-term, remote, real-time and on-line monitoring the healthy situation of Tai-pingzhuang bridge.In the design and research process, a variety of techniques of the system have been improved. Firstly, smart film array have been improved. Secondly, the laser transmitter of the deflection monitoring system has been improved. Finally , developed a power manager which could intelligently control the working status of system sensors. Whit these improvements, the health monitoring system's stability, reliability and engineering capabilities have been improved.The main work of this paper includes the following four aspects: (1)Analyze the general situation of the development of BSHM system and its existing problems; (2)According to the requirement of structural monitoring of Tai-pingzhuang bridge, adopt the BSHM system invented by chongqing jiaotong university and analyze the scheme of its hardware and software; (3)Install the BSHM system on the Tai-pingzhuang bridge, including crack monitoring system, deflection monitoring system, strain monitoring system, temperature monitoring system and interrelated instruments such as industrial computer, lightning proof equipment, etc; (4)Establish a long-term monitoring and evaluation system of structural healthy situation of Tai pingzhuang bridge.
