The application of cyclotrons besides fundamental nuclear physics research has been unceasingly developed at present, of which medical diagnosis and therapy is the most important aspect. The research of CYCHU-10 cyclotron used for PET isotopes production is significant to end the disadvantage that the domestic cyclotrons of this kind are mostly imports. It is necessary to develop the compact low energy cyclotron with our own independent intellectual property right.Control system is one of the most important parts of cyclotron which is strictly related to the safety and stabilization. Based on the method of finite state machine (FSM), control system simulation model of the CYCHU-10 cyclotron is developed with Simulink and Stateflow under the Matlab environment. The control logic of the model is designed according to the actual requirement of cyclotron operation. The model has a hierarchy modularized structure, which makes it easy to reflect the dynamic logic of a complex system. On the basis of offline Stateflow model, a scheme of the hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) control system simulation is presented. The designed platform is under the LabVIEW environment including a PAC controller prototype and a cyclotron operation condition virtual simulator based on NI PXI. Finally, the actualization method of control system is discussed based on the subsystem establishment such as the machine interlock and protection system, power control system and water cooling system. Moreover, the graphical user interface (GUI) is developed, realizing the configuration of the whole control system.The FSM offline simulation result indicates that the function design of control system is feasible and effective, and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation is proved a significant tool in prototyping complex, highly available system, especially when a portion of the given system is a simulation algorithm and a portion of the same system is a hardware implementation. The use of HIL accelerates the controller real time validation test, reduces risk, and shortens the design cycle. The practical operation of some subsystems has proved that the reliability, maintainability and expandability of the system are enhanced by the control system.
