Accounting for the energy problem getting more and more seriously, the Underfloor air distribution (UFAD) systems have been arousing more interests because of its potential benefits as improved ventilation effectiveness, occupant satisfaction with thermal comfort and energy performance, as well as increased ease of reconfiguration. The study and application of UFAD in China are still in the beginning period. Lack of familiarity by building industry, need for design guidelines and tools, fundamental dispute on key issues are the current barriers to the widely application of UFAD. This article will attempt to arrange and analysis the achievements of the UFAD research all over the world. And then, make a discussion about the approaches on the integrated design of residence & UFAD.Through the study of the relative articles and cases, we can conclude that the key differences between UFAD and conventional overhead systems are the application of the underfloor supply plenum and the air distribution thermal stratification. This article will give a detailed description and analysis about these two basic principles of UFAD. And this article will also list several approaches to calculate the cooling load and the airflow of UFAD which have crucial impact on the final efficiency of UFAD, afterwards; an analysis based on the experiment data will be given. Then, approaches on integrated design of residence & UFAD will be discussed. Finally, an example about integrated design will be given to reference. After the study of the basic theories, system components, design approaches and the applications of UFAD. Through the theories analysis, experiments, CFD simulations, the feasibility of the UFAD & integrated design of the residence has been identified. Moreover, reasonable references and proposals are tried to be given.
