Compared with other types of unmanned aircrafts, mini unmanned helicopter has small volume, light weight and can be adapted to the various complicated environment. Owing to its advantages, it is getting more and more popular in civil fields such as search, human rescue, aerial topographic survey, military reconnaissance etc. Ground monitor and control system (GMCS) is an important part of the mini unmanned helicopter system, more and more domestic and international research institutions have paid great attention to GMCS. Researching on the key problem and development technology has great significance for engineering development and application of the small scale unmanned helicopter system.The main purpose of this paper is to research the design and development of ground monitor and control system for a small scale unmanned helicopter and to realize the software programming.The main research contents and contribution are as follows:(1) Combined with the characteristics of the small scale helicopter project, we analyzed the functions of GMCS and completed the overall design of functions and structure of the GMCS software.(2) Wireless communication function between ground monitor and control system and onboard control system has been designed and realized(3) Based on the geographic information system (GIS), functions of realized mission trajectory planning, real-time trajectory display and historical trajectory reappearance were realized completely.(4) Flight real-time data processing functions including flight status monitoring, data storage, data analysis, and multiple displays were achieved successfully.(5) The system calibration module and control parameters setting module were realized.(6) Through indoor flight experiment and outdoor flight experiment, the correctness of the system design and system realization was verified correctly.This paper designs and realizes ground monitor and control system for a small scale unmanned helicopter. In the process of project implementation, the whole system runs well. Due to the object-oriented development method, it has good expansibility and lays a foundation for future GMCS study, such as long-distance flight, multiple ground monitor and control system etc.
