Along with the rapid development of urbanization, the city of Tianjin faces the problems of water shortage and water pollution. As a crucial role of natural water circulation system, stormwater plays an important part in regulating and saving limited water resources, as well as maintaining the ecological balance. The use of stormwater is essential to improve urban ecological environment, and is also one of main ways to achieve sustainable water resources.In this paper, on the basis of analysis of a large number of domestic and foreign stormwater literature and application cases, diverse methods and means of stormwater utilization are summed up, then through analysis the situation of water resources, rainfall characteristics and the prospects for stormwater utilization in Tianjin, the feasibility of the stormwater utilization is researched.However, the feasibility of using stormwater runoff depends on water quality. In order to study the pollution characteristics of stormwater runoff of Tianjin, this paper summaries results of the Tianjin runoff water quality monitoring, and combines with the results of Beijing to analyse major pollutants of runoff the correlation between different pollutants and runoff characteristics in different underlying surfaces, such as road, roof and lawn, as well as analyse major pollutants of runoff in different functional areas and the impacts of stormwater runoff on the landscape water. It reveals the main factors affecting runoff, and presents control measures and proposals accordingly, which provides the theoretical basis and data reference for implementing water pollution control measures and re-use program of rainwater.Finally, on the basis of above study, through the theory of urban stormwater utilization, including direct, indirect and comprehensive stormwater utilization technology to probe and summarize stormwater collecting and treatment technologies of road, roof, lawn, residential district and triage drainage system respectively.
