Magneto-Rheological (MR) fluid, a type of intelligent material, changes its rheological properties when exposed to an external magnetic field called the Magneto-Rheological effect. Coupler, a general machinery part, is widely used to transfer torque and motion in the drive system of metallurgical equipment and other heavy equipments. A new intelligent coupler, Magneto-Rheological coupler (MR coupler) is designed by using of Magneto-Rheological fluid, in order to control the torque of coupler and to protect the coupler and other important parts from overload. This dissertation focuses on the structure, magnetic field, and model of a Magneto-Rheological coupler with an effort to study the influence of assembly accuracy on the coupler and to solve the main problems in designing the coupler.The main work and conclusions of this dissertation are as follows:(1)Design the coupler and experimental platform in details, and give the theory designing equation for the coupler.(2)Discuss the influence of working gap on the magnetic field, shear stress and working torque of Magneto-Rheological coupler by using the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and experimental method,and based on the analysis, we give a proposed value for the working gap of the coupler.(3)Analyze the influence of misalignment of the inner drums and outer drums on the pressure of MR fluid, shear stress, force of the drums and the working torque of Magneto-Rheological coupler, and conclude that the misalignment on the working torque is less than 5 percent.(4)Study the dynamic model of Magneto-Rheological coupler. Based on the relationship of the working torque, the shear stress, the magnetic field and the current of the coils, a dynamic model for Magneto-Rheological coupler is established where the rotational speed ratio of the outer drum and the inner drum is used to describe the working torque of the coupler, and this model is well consistent with the experimental data.
