Surge tank is an important part in the hydropower station, its structurcal stability directly affects the safe operation of the hydropower station. With the improvement of construction technology of hydropower construction, the surge shaft's diameter become greater, the structure is more complex and often adverse geological conditions encountered. At present, the traditional structure mechanical method and three-dimensional finite element method can used to analysis of surge tank, the traditional structure mechanical method for analysis of a simple surge tank, not better reflect the complex structure of the surge shaft and the rock form of the actual work. Therefore, it is a very interesting topic to research the working characteristics of surge tank and the stability of surrounding rock.In this paper, a surge tank is taken as an engineering example, the structural mechanics and finite element are used to analysis stability of the surge tank and surrounding rock when excavation and construction. Main tasks are as follows:(1) By using structural mechanics method to calculate the stress of the surge tank. Analysis of the reasonableness of calculated results and the structural stability.(2) Analysis using the finite element method of stress characteristics of the surge tank's structure, and the results were analyzed.(3)The results of surge shaft with structural mechanics method and the finite element method are compared, the Regularity and its differences of the results of two methods are analyzed.(4) Put forward opinions and suggestions for the design of the surge tank.
