Axial compressor is not only one of the three core components of the gas turbine, but also an important machinery in chemical industry, oil industry, power station and a wide application; so the design of the compressor has always been a high priority. In the new multi-stage compressor design process, in order to shorten the design cycle, increase design reliability and reduce design costs, compressor zero-staging is an effective way to increase both the pressure ratio and the mass flow rate.This paper analyzed the base compressor performance, new requirements and design principle of zero-staging, and discussed the zero-staging procedure, the selections of match point between zero stage and base compressor, and the determination of flow path and pressure ratio of the zero stage. Based on the above discussion, the One-dimensional and Three-dimensional designs of the zero stage have been made.The operating characteristics of the base compressor, zero stage and the resultant compressor were carried out at 110%,100%,90%,80%,70% of the rated speed lines, etc. by 3D viscous CFD software to verify the excellence of the design method of zero stage. This paper first analyzed the uneven distribution flow caused by volute and overall performances of zero stage, base compressor and resultant compressor. Second discussed the match performance between base compressor and resultant compressor from the relative flow angle, absolute flow angle, total pressure ratio, degree of reaction, corrected mass flow corrected rotational speed and etc. Final analyzed operating performance of resultant compressor through the static pressure distribution, streamlines on Sl surface, Mach number and etc. Through the numerical simulations and the above analysis, we can conclude that the resultant compressor met the new working condition requirements with good match operating characteristics. The zero stage improved the base compressor operating characteristics and stability.
