Feature technology obviously plays a crucial role in the process of accomplishing integration on product design and manufacturing. On the one hand, kinds of information are included in the feature model, by which all aspects with product design and manufacturing can be associated together; on the other hand, product development cycle can be shortened and design and production efficiency can be improved with describing products using feature model reasonably and effectively. The purpose of research on part design based on the manufacturing feature is making the design and manufacture parallel combination, as well as providing effective support for parallel work of product structure design and process production. In this context, main research contents are started as follow.Manufacturing feature is defined and classified through the researching on information demand of part manufacturing process and process decision, on this basis, the information included in manufacturing feature is analyzed and inductived, manufacturing feature model is set up, and the treating method for important information of manufacturing feature model is given. Manufacturing feature information is recorded and stored with configuration file technology to provide support for setting up application system. Manufacturing recourse model is established, and constraint checking method of manufacturing recourse for manufacturing feature is given, thus the reliability of part design is ensured.Composite relation of manufacturing features is researched based on the part manufacturing process, and the combination relation is classified, judgment method of combination relation type and describe method of combination information in the feature file are given, defining rules of manufacturing process are set up for different combination relations, information foundation and decision basis are provided.Different manifestation of cutting form information in manufacturing feature field and geometric shape information in geometric feature field as well as internal relations between features are analyzed, on this basis, mapping mechanism from manufacturing feature to geometric feature is set up, and feature mapping rules and knowledge base are constructed, the method based on knowledge and production rule are used to realize the mapping from manufacturing feature to geometric feature.Function modules are set up through secondary development for UG NX 4.0 software, and software system of part design based on manufacturing features is set up on this basis. The system is run with a type of reducer as the design object, and design result showed that product design and manufacturing could be integrated by the system effectively, and the efficiency of product research and development is increased, as well as the effectiveness and feasibility of the system.
