Slope is a very common and significant natural disaster in the construction project, the research of slope stability analysis is still a hot and difficult issue in geotechnical engineering. It is a research that How to rationally analysis the slope stability and taking economic and reliable protective measures with important theoretical and practical value. In this paper, the author researches the slope behind the Qianchang slope of Guanyinyan hydropower station, and adopts limit equilibrium method using GEO-SLOPE software and finite element-based strength reduction method using ANSYS to analysis the stability according the safety factor. The main research contents and results are:(1)The development process and the advantages and disadvantages of slope stability methods were simply introduced, which are limit equilibrium method and numerical analysis method;(2)Details of basic principles of the simplified BISHOP method and JANBU method were introduced, which belong to the limit equilibrium theory by GEO-SLOPE software. The basic principles, the selection of yield criterion and the slope failure were elaborated based on finite element strength reduction by ANSYS;(3)Three typical analysis profiles were selected, and they were the prospecting line profile, its upstream and its downstream profiles. Limit equilibrium method and finite element-based strength reduction method were adopted to analyze the stability according the safety factor.
