With the development of computer technology and optical design theory as well as the increasing maturity of the processing technology, zoom system has been widely applied to various industries of national economy and national defense construction. In general, in any of the areas and sectors which use optical system, the lens in them can be replaced of zoom lens. In recent years, because of the advancement of science and technology, gradually increasing of CCD/CMOS image sensor manufacturing process, the use of high precision CNC machine tool and the maturity of aspheric design and processing technology, zoom system develop more rapidly. It brought new features to zoom system. Based on these new features, designing new zoom system undoubtedly has great significance.The details of this paper mainly include the following aspects:(1)It introduces the development history and trend of the zoom system, and discusses the current research state of zoom system at home and abroad. The paper also discusses the basic concepts and basic types of zoom system, analyzes characteristics and zoom equation of traditional zoom system, and describes the general method of designing zoom system.(2)The article introduces the development of key technologies in the zoom system. Through the contrast of the CCD/CMOS image sensor and the photographic films, it comes up with new features of zoom lenses. It discusses the development of zoom form in zoom system, gives three typical forms in the process of development, and analyzes the zoom equation of them. At the same time, this paper discourses the role of the aspheric surface in aberrational correction and now the processing technology of the aspheric surface.(3)Applying the multi-move-component zoom system discussed in this article, with the help of ZEMAX software for optical design, we designed a 7 times wide-angle zoom lens for digital cameras. At the last, giving comprehensive evaluation of the quality of the zoom lens, evaluation results show that the zoom lens can meet the requirements of digital cameras, realizes the miniaturization design.
