In order to detect more and more weak celestial objects and more sophisticated structure, spectrum, and time-varying information, higher requirements for radio telescopes are brought forward. In March 1999, "Large Radio Telescope FAST (Five hundred meter Aperture Spherical telescope) pre-research" as the knowledge innovation project of Chinese Academy of Sciences was officially approved. The paper does dynamics simulation and analysis of large radio telescopes to clear away obstacles for the project. The ADAMS software is used to establish the virtual prototype model of three-dimensional entities, including the support tower, the top pulley, the drive device (drum), and wire rope cabin. In order to simplify the model, the square cabin is instead with a weight, and the support tower is omitted if it needs not to be analyzed. The contact force and kinematic pair are added, and the complete virtual prototype mechanical model is established. As the known trajectories of cabin, two limit positions of cabin movement are analyzed. Six movement parameters of drive device are set, and the dynamics simulation is done. The curves of steel wire rope forces in tower are gotten. And the forces and moments of the kinematic pairs are also gotten. The forces and moments of the pulleys in top of tower are analyzed. In order to meet the needs of high-frequency work and ensure the safety of pulleys, the cable guiding mechanism is designed to solve the problem that lateral forces and moments are large.Through the dynamic simulation and analysis results of supporting system, the mechanical key issues encountered in the implementation maybe are solved. This issue lays the foundation for the implementation of the project, and also provides a reference for the flexible body dynamics modeling and simulation.
