Housing is the most basic building type. With the development of urbanization, people have become increasingly demanding on residential design. However, transformation of social structure, economic industrial restructuring, state-owned enterprise reform and other reasons, there still a large number of low-income families exist in China. At the same time, the renovation of old residential areas and shanty towns also included in the scope of housing for low-income groups. The topic focus of the study discussed the current situation is to resolve the feasibility of low-income people living in a way: Promoting the implementation of small-family homes and achieving to live a more optimized solution within a limited area.This paper begins with the descriptions of the content, purpose, meaning and related concepts have defined. It analyzes the background of urban low-income families, economic status and residential status. Then it examines the contradictions in the housing of low-income families: between high prices and low purchasing power of the contradiction, between the limited living space and continuously improve the living standard, etc.; This shows that the research of small area-family and land for residential is the key to solve the housing problem of low-income families and it needs the architect's precision design. The paper also discusses the special ways to solve the problem between China's national conditions and urban low-income families.First, establish a full low-rent housing security system. Second, implement the Affordable Housing Regulations. Third, perfect the transformation of squatter settlements and the old residential areas.In the middle of the paper, it analyzes the household behavior and believes that some basic functional requirements, health requirements and safety requirements should be met. It starts with the design principles from small-family homes and explores the effect of regional climatic conditions, economic conditions, and geographical conditions on the differences of the residential design.At last, it combines the innovative analysis of an instance of actual participation. It explores the current concern about the direction of the small-family homes through the competition cases in 2008 the national security of housing design. It clearly implements that the design of small-family should follow the design concepts of "people-oriented" and "sustainable development".
