Temperature is a very important parameter in the process of steel smelting. Temperature measurement is directly related to quality and production costs of the product. Therefore, it's of great significance to measure temperature accurately during the process of production.Optical fiber sensing technology has been vigorously developed and extensively used because of strong anti-interference ability, simple structure, powerful reliability and high sensitivity. This article narrates the research and application of colorimetric thermometry principle basing on optical fiber sensing technology. Comparing to traditional radiation thermometry, colorimetric thermometry has reduced the emissive influence to a minimum. The design of the colorimetric thermometer is divided into high-temperature probe design, the optical signal acquisition and processing as well as temperature display. Firstly, it narrates the high-temperature protective material's selection and the design of the structure of the probe. Then through a function of radiation power, temperature and wavelength, combined with the requirements of the measurement sensitivity and wavelength range selects an appropriate filter range. And then use the WDM to separate signal according to the proper signal separation method. Finally, it can carry on the digital-analog conversion of signal by the choice of A/D converter in the8096/8098microcontroller chip after amplifying and filtering the signal, then process and display the signal. For the thermocouple has been completely mature, it has a brief introduction of the thermocouple and a contrast of the measurement results to the colorimetric thermometer at the end of this paper. Colorimetric thermometer and thermocouple are the same from the measurement results, but at the same time it overcome some shortcomings of the thermocouple, which explains the bright prospects of the colorimetric thermometer use in high temperature measurement.
