Soil classification is a basic work in soil surveying, mapping, management, ecological protection and agricultural technique transfer. Based on Chinese Soil Taxonomy, taking Jianghan Plain as research area, this paper studied the soil series classification and denomination. Twenty six soil profiles were investigated in Dongxihu district of Wuhan, Qianjiang county and Jiangling county of Jingzhou in Hubei province. Soil samples collection and some physical and chemical properties analyse were conducted. The main results were showed:(1) Following indication of Chinese Soil Taxonomy, soil profile morphology and its physical and chemical properties, we identified four diagnostic horizons, which were Anthrostagnic epipedon, Agric horizon, Hydragric horizon and Cambic horizon and also six diagnostic characteristics, which were Gleyic features, Rodex factures, Soil temperature regimes, Soil moisture regimes, Ferric property and Calcaric property. All soils can be calssified to Cambosols and Anthrosols.(2)By means of meteorological data analysis, soil samples are considered stagnic and moist soil, and further retrieval proved to be artificial soil hydroponics, wet cambisols and artificial soil moist. Then according to Diagnostic characteristics, they are divides into Gleyi-Stagnic Anthrosols, Hapli-Stagnic Anthrosols, Ochri-Aquic Cambosols, Hapli-Udic Cambosols. In accordance with the reaction of lime in the soil profile, the soils were classified into seven subgroups.(3)Total phosphorus, total potassium, calcium carbonate and cation exchange capacity were distinctly related with multiple soil characters. Calcium carbonate, texture and total niterogen were quit different in all swatches, which indicated that the three indexes have a wide extent influence on soil. Besides, soil strcture and soil characters had profound affection on it. So these properties above-mentioned were important factors in the division of soil series. (4)According to the selected nature in the study and the corresponding measured index we constituted the factors of soil series. Specific indexes of soil series taxonomy and retrieval orders are in the following:a)Characteristic horizon:the classification was based on the soil proile with/without characteristics of soil, soil types, thickness and arrangements in the soil profile.b)Soil texture:especially the status of surface soil texture, different texture types were classified into different soil series.c)Cation exchange capacity:on the basis of Cation exchange capacity in the sample areas, the soil series were classified to four levels:44.0-32.0,32.0-21.0,21.0-13.0,<8.0 (cmol/kg)(5)In terms of the standard of Chinese soil Taxonomy, the soil series were divided into thirteen parts in the sample areas, in which eight parts attribute Cambosols and the other five attribute Anthrosols.
