The evaluation of landscape ecological quality is of significant importance to understand the quality of landscape ecosystem and its changes. Previous research on the evaluation of regional landscape ecological quality is less. In this paper, a case study has been made in Haitan Island of Fujian Province. The study was based on the Landsat-7 satellite images of 2003 and 2009 and also adopted some socio-economic statistics data. The classification system of landscape ecology was established from the perspective of the functional types of coastal protection forest. First, evaluation indicator systems of landscape ecological quality were founded from three aspects of landscape stability, landscape disturbance and socio-economic effect degree. The entropy-right method was employed to determine the weights of assessment indices. The evaluation model of landscape ecological quality was built by using the integrated analysis method. After calculation, the values of landscape ecological quality evaluation were obtained for the coastal protection forest in Haitan Island from 2003 to 2009. Second, the radial basis function (RBF) neural network was constructed. The values of landscape ecological quality during two periods of time in the study area were considered as the input data, thus they are involved in the calculation of RBF neural network model. The results included the following two aspects:1) the score of landscape ecological quality evaluation in the study area decreased from 8.2718 in 2003 to 8.0756 in 2009. It indicated that the overall situation of landscape ecological quality of coastal protection forest was not good and tended to be worse.2) The grade of landscape ecological quality of Haitan coastal protection forest in 2003 was 2.7774, but it was 2.8841 in 2009. It demonstrated that landscape ecological quality evaluation in the study area ranged from good to moderate, but the grade was close to moderate. This indicated that the coastal protection forest only had the basic protection function and had an unhealthy tendency of degradation. Finally, according to the problems existing in the coastal protection forest of landscape ecological quality evaluation in the study area, the suggestions were that the coastal protection forests should be managed and improved from two aspects:one was to improve the condition of their own; the other was to reduce the external disturbance and damage.
