Objective:To investigate the expression of MMP-9,VEGF in meningioma tissue and their correlation with tumor microvessel density(MVD) and tumor recurrence; we hoped we could find valuable basis of early diagnosis and the prognostic indicator for the tumor recurrence.Methods:78 specimens of meningiomas with complete follow-up data were collected from patients who underwent surgery at the Pingdu People's Hospital and the medical college of Qingdao university ffiliated hospital from January 2001 to Sept 2006. A SP(streptavidinbiotin peroxidase)immunohistochemical method has been used to detect MMP-9,VEGF expression and MVD value of the 78 meningiomas and the 10 normal brain meninges. The relationship of MMP-9,VEGF expression and MVD, tumor recurrence were analysised.Resluts:The positive expression rate of MMP-9 and VEGF in meningioma was 62.82% and 75.64%, and the positive expression of MMP-9 and VEGF was closely associated with each other(r=0.449,P<0.01)..the positive expression of MMP-9,VEGF was closely associated with MVD value using the S-pearman rank correlation analysis ((r=0.692, P=0.000; r=0.755,P=0.000); The expression of MMP-9, VEGF, MVD in meningioma was closely associated with the pathologic grading and recurrence of tumor (P<0.01)Conclusions:1. The expression of MMP-9.VEGF in meningioma were highly and there was positive correlation of the expression between MMP-9 and MVD, or between VEGF and MVD in meningioma. It suggested that MMP-9, VEGF may play an important role in accelerating tumor angiogenesis.2. The expression of MMP-9, VEGF in meningioma was highly and there was significent positive correlation of their expression. It suggested that MMP-9,VEGF may have joint action in accelerating tumor angiogenesis and recurrence. 3.The expression of MMP-9, VEGF in meningioma was highly and closely associated with pathological grade and tumor recurrence.This suggested that the expression of MMP-9,VEGF should be used as a helpful index for malignant degree and the recurrence potency of meningioma.
