| The late Qing painter and poet Zhao ZhiQian (1829-1884) was good at calligraphy and seal-carving, who influenced a great many of following painters and opened up a new road for Chinese modern art.Zhao ZhiQian's painting style is not only the combination of multiple cultural genes with accumulation, but also a kind of optimization in understanding and operation, between tradition and innovation. In the pursuit of the approval on "elegance" with "commonness", Zhao ZhiQian was always looking for a best way. Zhao ZhiQian paintings, with its unique art flexible spirit, created a new style, appreciated by everyone. His heart was entirely put into politics but ending in failure. Finally he had to live a hard life by selling his own paintings because of the force from livelihoods. During Zhao Zhiqian's life, art played an important role. On the one hand, Zhao Zhiqian's flexible spirit of art took on useful measures from the traditional painting, paying close attention to reflecting original objects and mixing all kinds of methods with seal-carving with painting. On the other hand, Zhao ZhiQian's social contacts and the updating of his cultural concepts and aesthetic consciousness had an important impact on his painting style, to a certain extent. |
