Humor is a pervasive human phenomenon, used broadly and frequently in the society, in many spheres and aspects of life. It is also a kind of art, a part of culture, as well as an important way to facilitate our communication. The difficulty of humor translation can be compared with that of poet translation. Humor language have been studied broadly from many perspectives and based on different theoretical foundations both in China and in other countries. However, research on humor translation is quite limited, especially research with the guidance of a suitable translation theory. This paper studies English-Chinese humor translation based on the core theory of German functionalism, the skopostheorie. It first analyzes the text type and function of humor text based on skopostheorie, then applies the three basic rules and two translation strategies of skopostheorie in humor translation and then tries to provide some translation techniques for the translation of reality-based, culture-based and word-based humor. Moreover, it makes an analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of different translation techniques in following the three rules so that translators could make a proper choice to achieve the optimal result and fulfill the dominant skopo of humor translation.
