With the development of the economic globalization, China's foreign trade becomesmore and more mature. In the foreign trade activities, the English translation of foreigntrade correspondence plays a very important role. The quality of the English translationof foreign trade correspondence will influence the result of the foreign trade. The Englishtranslation of foreign trade correspondence goes into the type of the pragmatictranslation, and the texts usually are informative ones. The skopos theory is particularlyuseful for pragmatic translation, and has a certain significance. So the thesis will analyzethe English translation of foreign trade correspondence under the guidance of the skopostheory.The skopos theory places emphasis on the comprehensibility of the target textreceivers, and it focuses on the functions that the target text should have. According toanalyzing the foreign trade correspondence, we can know that the foreign tradecorrespondence often has three main functions: informative function, communicativefunction and authoritative function. Therefore, when translating the foreign tradecorrespondence, we should be familiar to the different text types and the trade terms, andthe target text should conform to the business standards. The skopos theory makes thetarget text as important as the source text, it has tactfully explained the relation offunction and loyalty. According to the skopos theory, there are three important rules:skopos rule, coherence rule, and fidelity rule. According to this thesis, the author willtake detail examples to prove that these three rules are very useful in the process oftranslating the foreign trade correspondence. The skopos theory has provided a newperspective to guide the translation for foreign trade correspondence.The thesis is intended to discuss the translation methods for foreign tradecorrespondence on the basis of the skopos theory which is proposed by Vermeer. Thereare six chapters in this thesis. Chapter one is the introduction to the whole thesis,introducing the significance of discussing the translation methods for foreign tradecorrespondence and the structure of this thesis. Chapter two is the introduction to theskopos theory. In this chapter, the German functional translation theory will beintroduced, and the emphasis will be placed on Vermeer's skopos theory. The basicaspects, the theoretical foundation, the three important rules, and the advantages andlimitations of the skopos theory will be discussed in detail. Chapter three is theintroduction to the foreign trade correspondence, including the general functions,structure, and writing principles of the foreign trade correspondence. Chapter four willanalyze the features of the foreign trade correspondence from the perspectives of words, syntax and style in detail. As to words, trade terms, formal words, abbreviations andarchaic words are widely used in the foreign trade correspondence. As to syntax, longsentences and passive sentences are frequently used in the foreign trade correspondence.As to style, the most important feature is the politeness. To a large extent, all thesefeatures are determined by specific purposes of the foreign trade correspondence.Chapter five applies the skopos theory to the English translation of foreign tradecorrespondence from the perspectives of words, syntax and style. According to analyzingmany examples, the author summarizes some translation methods for foreign tradecorrespondence. Chapter six is the conclusion. The skopos theory provides a newperspective for translation of foreign trade correspondence, and it is feasible to guide thetranslation for foreign trade correspondence.
