The Telephone is a widespread one-act comic opera, composed by Gian Carlo Menotti who is one of the most representative modern opera composers.This paper will explore how to play the role of "Lucy" through the musical-dramatical structure and character analysis.This paper consists of four chapters. The first chapter is an overview on the life and works of the composer, as well as the background and plot of the opera. The second chapter is an analysis on the two dimensions of drama structure and characters' relationship. The third chapter focuses on the character of Lucy, based on which the author presented proposals on the role shaping in Chapter four.
