D. H. Lawrence is one of the greatest writers in English literary history. In his short life, he wrote many famous novels. Women in Love is regarded as the highest achievement of Lawrence's novels. This thesis analyzes the unbalanced world represented in the novel:the imbalance of the relationships between man and nature, male and female, man and self, and exposes the harm to man and nature caused by the modern industrial civilization and the First World War. It intends to arouse the human ecological awareness and warns that humans should treat nature in a friendly way and male and female should build the balanced relationships in spirit and flesh. This thesis is composed of four Chapters, besides the Introduction and Conclusion. The introduction briefly reviews Lawrence's lifetime and his novel Women in Love. Besides, this part also skims through the previous literature review at home and abroad and puts forward the key arguments of this thesis.Chapter One gives a brief introduction to the theory of ecocriticism and the unbalanced world in Women in Love.Chapter Two examines the unbalanced relationships between man and nature represented in Women in Love. It's argued that the industrialization and the First World War brought out the degradation and damage to the beautiful natural environment and animals.Chapter Three analyzes the unbalanced relationships between male and female brought about by the industrial civilization and the war, that is, the ruined relationships between Gerald and Gudrun and the suppressed relationships between Hermione and Birkin.Chapter Four investigates the unbalanced relationships between man and self: the unbalanced mentality and psyche brought about by the industrial civilization and war, such as Gerald, Gudrun and Birkin's unbalanced psyche. Finally, the conclusion part summarizes the unbalanced world in the novel from the perspective of ecocriticism:the unbalanced relationships between man and nature, male and female, man and self are caused by the side effects of the modern industrial civilization and the harm of the war. It implies that human beings should treat nature in a friendly way. Male and female should build the balanced relationships in body and spirit, so that the unbalanced relationships between man and nature, male and female, man and self will turn into the balanced state. Furthermore, this thesis has the important realistic significance.
