As a special formal language in graphic design, blank refers to the background space behind the main body of words and patterns. Quite a few beginners dismiss it as a negative and meaningless part of the whole design, which is not always true, especially of today's application. Actually, in this digital age dominated by visual media, when people are more than often overwhelmed by a huge complex of diverse visual information, blank can serve as a visual and psychological refuge for a break and contemplation. Helping to create plain and prominent images, blank makes the information conveyed by designs easier to communicate to the viewer. This dissertation primarily discusses the effect, both visual and psychological, that blank space can generate, and is made up of three parts. The first part focuses on the concept of blank and the significance of its existence. Since blank is an important means of the presentation of space in design, proper use of it can increase the speed at which the information is spread. The second part, based on the analysis of different relationships between blank and pattern, demonstrates the various dimensions and expressive ability of the means of blank. The final part summarizes the functions of the use of blank, including directing visual motion, stimulating associations, emphasizing the theme, relieving visual fatigue, expressing feelings and emotions and creating attractive atmospheres. With such a wealth of devices, the designer can apply the means of blank according to different purposes.Although there have been quite a few relevant studies of blank, this dissertation deals with this subject in terms of multidimensional expression and programmatic value of this formal language. In so doing, the author hopes to deepen the understanding of blank and improve the application of it in future graphic design.
