Projection, as a key concept in functional grammar, refers to a kind of logical-semantic relationship between two components in complexes, and exists in such structures as nominal group complexes, verbal group complexes, clause complexes and embedding. The present study aims to provide fresh ideas for the existing body of work on projection within SFG from more levels and more perspectives. Based on the previous research, this thesis sets out to provide an extended view on discourse to interpret the language phenomenon of projection, adopting a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches. Meanwhile, projection theory is applied in English reading teaching. This thesis is innovative. In the light of Martin's genre theory and the top-down reading model, the author puts forward a practical reading model for the application of projection theory to English reading teaching, i.e. the reading model combining the macro-perspective with the micro-perspective, and draws a figure. From the macro-perspective, projection types can determine text genre. On the basis of communicative purposes, the new model focuses on the integrity of text situation and helps students predict text structure. Thus, students'communicative competence is improved through it. However, language knowledge should be considered in order to make the new model suit the current situation in English class of China, such as a large number of students in class and different levels of English proficiency. Therefore, from the micro-perspective, the difference in text meaning caused by different projection types should be paid attention. English teachers can take this figure as guidance in reading teaching and help students distinguish the projected sources, i.e. explicit projection and implicit projection.
