Study on complexes is an important field in modern Chinese research. In recent years the issue of focus has been a hotspot in discussions between grammarians. As far as it concerned, there is no complete, systematic and deep lucubration on this issue. Therefore the purpose of the study stated in this essay is to make contributing factors to this field. As the cause and effect complex is one of the typical styles of Mandarin complexes, it is our wish that the study of the cause and effect complexes’focus could promote the overall studies on focus of mandarin complexes. The major subjects this essay revolved are as follow:Chapter One:Introduction. In this part, the current status of study on cause and effect complexes and focus of Chinese, object of study, research meaning, and research methods are introduced, with corpus briefly described.Chapter Two:The prominence of the cause clause in cause and effect complexes. It starts from dividing the cause and effect complexes into cause-effect complexes and effect-cause complexes. Then aspects such as marks, structures and tones are brought in to get the rules for the prominence of the cause clause.Chapter Three:The prominence of the effect clause in cause and effect complexes. It starts from dividing the cause and effect complexes into cause-effect complexes and effect-cause complexes. Then aspects such as marks, structures and tones are brought in to get the rules for the prominence of the effect clause.Chapter Four: In the study of the focus of cause and effect complexes, a new method in distinguishing focuses, adding of "fouze" clause, is used. The negative clause is the focus of the whole complexes. The theoretical basis and feasibility of the new focus judging method are detailed analyzed in this chapter. From the analysis, it can be concluded that this new method could be generalized to judge the focus in other kinds of complexes.Chapter Five: Analysis about the role the meanings of the clauses plays and the influences the compound sentences generate. Theoretical basis is the theory of clausal pivot. We understand that the meanings of clauses generate the prominence of focus of complexes. It is the meanings of cause clauses and effect clauses, not the word order, like cause-effect or effect-cause, which makes the certain clause the focus of the complexes. It is also understood, that apart from the meaning of the clause, the complete meaning of the compound sentence generates influences to the focusing process of any clause. Or, say, counteraction.Chapter Six:Explanation on how the former/updated information and word order affect the focus of the cause and effect complexes. It is our understanding that the influences the mentioned factors caused shall not be fundamental to the prominence of the focus in the complexesChapter Seven: Conclusion. Unsettled issues are listed with the conclusion.
