John Woo is one of the world famous Chinese directors, and he directed many films which were considered classic by many film makers and the audience. He and Ang Lee, are called Hollywood's "Gemini". In the early 1990s, many Hong Kong directors came to Hollywood seeking to develop, but John Woo was just access to Hollywood, made striking achievements in Hollywood. He had his own unique style which had a significant impact of Chinese film and world cinema, "face off" was a John Woo's film in Hollywood, and it had succeed in the reputation and commerce.box office records was up to 2.4 billion dollars. This film brought John Woo the highest honor awarded "Golden Circle Award" by Chinese National Endowment for the Arts.In recent years, the Hall theory is used to film studies by many researchers and scholars. In this thesis, with cross-cultural communication, the writer will use Hall model to research John Woo's success in Hollywood, and "face off" as the main object of study, from the perspective of coding and decoding to interpret the film.This article includes five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction, including of the problem, significance, dynamic domestic research and innovation of this paper review; the second chapter describes the Hall model, the main point of the Hall model encoding and decoding were analyzed, in the coding point of view, the writer Outlines the main factors inpacting the coder; in brief decoding point of view, the writer mainly explaines the three decoding position; The third chapter outlines the history of John Woo film, and his main film style; The fourth chapter is the movie "face off" of coding analysis, including analysis of the image codes and so on. The fifth chapter is the movie "Face off" decoding analysis, including video decoding process of the audience, the film generating meaning and three decoding stand.
