The frequent natural calamities in the Republic of China attracted attention of mass media composed mainly of newspapers and periodicals. With accurate and timely news reports, the mass media recorded the frequent natural calamities of various periods and their impact on Chinese society. The mass media also directly joined the social activities of disaster precaution and victims relief, contributing its part to the development of epidemic prevention and relief disaster. The mass media showed a strong sense of responsibility for the society and people's livelihood, and displayed the function of social interaction.With the case study of flood and drought disasters in 1935, this thesis tries to research the mass media's fearures and function during the disaster relief process from its own angle, in order to understand better the details of calamities and disaster relief in the Republic of China. The thesis includes four parts:The first chapter introduces the condition that combined the modern mass media and disaster relief. It introduces the idea that mass media's development offers technical support for disaster relief report on the basis of defining the difference between modern mass media and mass media in the Republic of China. The modern famine society provides real materials for media reports and becomes the focus of mass media's attention for the society and people's livelihood.The second chapter introduces the source and content of the disaster information transfer of mass media. The disaster information includes process, loss and influences, proving that the media in the Republic of China revealed disaster Information accurately, detailedly and timely. The official proclamations and broadcast, and the folk reliefs disaster association and journalists' investigations are the two main sources of disaster information.The third chapter introduces the fact that the mass media actively participates in the propaganda of relief around disaster. The propaganda targets are government's measures when it is in the face of disaster. The mass media sets a platform for relief propaganda and shows a three-dimensional scene to the public by using advertisements and camera films.From the starting point that mass media guides the relief opinions, the fourth chapter illustrates the occasionality of disaster in this year from the natural factors (such as physical geography, climate and water conservancy) which are published on the media while explaining the inevitability of the unprecedented disaster in this year through the social and political factors in specific historical circumstance. The media fully guides opinions of disaster precaution and relief, in order to offer ideas and voice concerns about the present situation.The conclusion looks for the blending node between solid reality and flowing history. The summing up point of the whole paper is the role and function contrast of mass media in the process of disaster reliefs in different periods. We should give full play to the mass media's technology advantage, transfer information effectively, spread the truth, provide people with correct media guidance, integrate social resources actively and give advices on relief information disclosure or fundraising, so that achieve the goal that draws lessons from the history.
