The Study On Lu'an Placenames From The Angle Of Culturallinguistics

The name of a place is an essential communication tool for any society, organization and individual. The more developed the economy and society is, the more frequently people make communicative activities. Thus the geographic name is more important. Especially in the information age, the importance of the name of a place becomes more prominent. It's not only relative to people's daily life, but also closely related to indispensable fundamental information resources such as the state administrative management, economic construction, culture construction and society construction. So it is imperative to make a special study.Place name is a proper noun in vocabulary of a language. It shares the same characteristics with other proper nouns. At the same time it also has differences from them. The composition of place names has certain grammatical regularities, and the choices of words closely related to its national language and dialect.The place name in the process of historical development, its writing and appellation may vary, and in the information society, it is required to be standardized regularized. The standardized treatment for contemporary names must relate language standardization to the principles and methods, therefore, place names cannot be separated from linguistics researches, which is one of the important contents of linguistics researches. Place name is a social and cultural phenomenon and the product of human social activities in every historical era, which has a profound geographical, historical and cultural background.Lu'an is a beautiful city with a long cultural history, which had human activities early in Neolithic Age. It is a vast area with numerous place names and abundant cultural resources. There are many Ancient cultural relics, which has attracted great interests from archaeologists and historians. But it rarely has systematic, academic and cultural research on Lu'an's long story. However, it is more rarely to summarize the place names from the perspective of culture research. With the development of economy and society, the requirements of culture-strengthen-province program, it has become an important topic for place names management department cultural departments and language culture scholars.This paper makes a comprehensive and systematic inspection and a rough study on the language phenomena and place names in Lu'an and gives an initial analysis of cultural connotations of place names in Lu'an by using theory and methods of cultural linguistics. This paper contains six parts, and the main contents are analyzed as follows:The first chapter is an introduction, and it shows the definition. Place names play an extremely important role in the construction of socialism modernization and its necessity of the study about the topic. Then the paper introduces the geographical history in general, and expounds the purpose and significance of research methods and corpora source.The second chapter analyzes the Lu'an linguistic features. The paper uses mainly from syllable structure and tonal patterns to show the phonetic features and place names of Lu'an; from the angle of wording tendencies and word-building to reveal the word characteristics of place names, from the angle of grammar to analyze the relationship of grammatical structure between words, and grammatical structure of proper nouns. It also briefly analyzes the the rhetoric devices involved of place names in Lu'an.The third chapter analyzes the ways of naming place names of Lu'an and its nomenclature from the geographical terrain, natural resources, historical events, myths and legends of cultural landscape, surname characters and ideals. The features of place names show the diversity of its place names of Lu'an.The fourth chapter shows cultural connotations of the place names Lu'an. It reflects the characteristics of regional culture, historical and cultural characteristics, social and cultural psychology, etc., which reveals rich cultural information.According to the problems existing in the management of Lu'an places, chapter five puts forward some suggestions, only as reference.The sixth chapter is a summary for the full study of the paper.
