Mass Media Influence On Female Body Image

In the mass media, we can easily find the ideal image of women, women develop the negative body image after exposed to these ideal images. The negative body image would lead to low self-esteem, depression, eating disorders and other psychological problems.Based on social psychology, using the sociocultural theory and the social comparison theory, the female college students in Jiangxi Normal University were studied through questionnaires and experiment. Research 1studied the influence of media and internalization on women's body image, Research 2 studied the influence of different social comparison orientations on female body image. The results are as follows:(1) The students in senior grade have better evaluation of appearance than junior students, appearance orientation and body areas satisfaction between senior and junior students shows no difference.(2) The media concern and internalization between senior and junior students shows no difference.(3) The media concern and body image are significantly positively related.(4) The female students who have different BMI show difference between appearance evaluation and body areas satisfaction.(5) The media concern significantly affect the female body image.(6) The females who were in higher social orientation level than those in lower social orientation level is more vulnerable to the impact of mass media.At the end of paper, it made conclusion with the shortcomings of this study and put forward some suggestions, provided theory for the women's positive body images. Exploring the influence of the mass media on women's body image, will help to prevent the negative body image of women, forming the right views of body and values.
