"Sheng Xiao Jian", full name is "Criticismto writting novels Shengxiaojianin huamanlou," was edited by Gu Kousheng, etc, published in late Ming and early Qing Dynasty. It is a valuable but long-forgotten collection of short stories. "Sheng Xiao Jian" will be studied in this thesis which has following sections: Introduction, review the research history of "Sheng Xiao Jian" and illustrate the significance of the topic, as well as the research methods, emphases and difficulties.The first chapter discusses the indite background of the novel. It has three sections. The first section focuses on the author, editor, and original Publication years of the novel "Sheng Xiao Jian". "Sheng Xiao Jian" has 15 authors, they are Guo Kousheng, Li Yingjun, Tie fang, Fuping jushi, Bai Qian, Jiu Jian tang, Su Yuan, Yi Yuweng, Bu Jie Daoren, Dun An, Weng Anzi, You Yanzhai, Juanshi caoan, Wu Wushi, Baolong jushi. The real name and biography are unknown; the editor is Guo Kousheng; published in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty. Section II focuses on the novel's indite background. By analyze the particular period of history:changing time between Ming and Qing Dynasty in which the authors lived, to know more about the social background of the work. Section III describes the main contents, releases and propagation of "Sheng Xiao Jian".The second chapter discusses the contents and thought meaning of the novel. Section I classify the contents of "Sheng Xiao Jian" from theme perspective to display its richness. Section II focus on content analysis of "Sheng Xiao Jian", revealed the full truth of the civil society in late Ming and early Qing which was flooded with money, power and desire. Section III sees through the exhortatory and ideal thought of intellectuals revealed by "Sheng Xiao Jian".The third chapter talks about the artistic features of "Sheng Xiao Jian", respectively from the narrative strategies of "gorgeous, odd and plain", colorful female characters and outstanding language art, analyzes its artistic achievements and features. The fourth chapter makes a brief comparison between related chapters of "Sheng Xiao Jian" and "Ru Lin Wai Shi", "Strange Stories", discussion focuses on the art of irony and the similarity of stories respectively. Conclusion section summarizes the literary and artistic value of "Sheng Xiao Jian". Also points out the defects and Shortcomings of the work.
