A Study On The Struggle Between Confucian Classics And Poems And Essays In Song Dynasty

The imperial examination system which was originated from Sui dynasty lasts over 1300 years. As a system of selecting officials, it had made important contributions to consolidate centralized feudal. Song Dynasty is an important stage of the development and changes of imperial examinations, while the struggle between Confucian classics and poems and essays was an important aspect of examination reform. However,there is not any paper which only research on the dispute between jinshi Confucian classics and poems and essays of the Song Dynasty.Analysis of the background, aim, content and significance of Confucian classics and poems and essays, this paper will reveal the development of imperial examination in Song Dynasty and its impact .This paper consists of three parts.The paper first provides a general research on the dispute between jinshi Confucian classics and poems and essays of the Northern Song Dynasty. The examination contents of Tang and Five-Dynasties Periods have some influence on its examination reform.And then the paper mainly researches the dispute between jinshi Confucian classics and poems and essays of the Southern Song Dynasty. The political situation of the early Southern Song Dynasty greatly influenced the reform of jinshi. In the middle of Southern Song Dynasty, the establishment of Neo-Confucianism of orthodoxy plays a decisive part of the struggle between Confucian classics and poems and essays. Zhu Xi is a major representative of Neo-Confucianism, whose attitude to it profoundly affected the development of imperial examination.The last part expounds the influence of the struggle between Confucian classics and poems and essays. One is the academic impact of Song Dynasty,the other is the impact of eight-part essays.
