| With the new re-orientation of educational objective issued by the College English Curriculum Requirements in our country, cultivating student's intercultural communicative communication (ICC) has become the teaching goal. So the course design should also focus on cultivating students'intercultural competence and enlarging students'international knowledge. Hence, it is realistic to study the relevant fields.Based on the theories of intercultural communicative competence and language acquisition, this thesis investigates the following two questions with both questionnaire survey and interviews:1. What's the overall situation of the effects on Non-English majors'ICC caused by English films?2. What're the differences of the effects on Liberal Arts students and Science Students'ICC caused by English films? In this study, the participants are 160 non-English majors in grade 2009 from Guangxi Normal University. The questionnaire is the modified version based on Lv Liang's (2007) non-English major undergraduates' ICC investigation questionnaire. The whole questionnaire includes four factors:the effects on students'intercultural awareness caused by English films; the effects on students' intercultural attitudes caused by English films; the effects on students' intercultural skills caused by English films; the effects on students'intercultural knowledge caused by English films. The data collections are conducted by using SPSS 13.0. The results of the study can be summarized as follows:1. The effects on students'ICC caused by English films are positive, especially on students' intercultural attitudes and intercultural knowledge.2. There a significant difference of the effects on Liberal Arts students and Science students' intercultural knowledge caused by English films. SS are more easily stimulated to learn knowledge about western etiquettes, taboos and intercultural communicative strategies etc. through English films.Based on these findings in the survey, this thesis brings up some suggestions for cultivating students'ICC:firstly, English teachers should improve their own ICC; secondly, films chosen by teachers should mostly match students'language level, should contain healthy values and present rich culture information; thirdly, in order to make students appreciate films deeply and thoroughly, teachers should skillfully design teaching procedures and classroom activities; fourthly, for the purpose of evaluating students'ICC, teachers should try to build a testing system. On the other hand, this thesis also brings up some suggestions for college students'English learning:firstly, students can choose some English films to learn English and cultures based on their own interest after class; Secondly, students should take advantages of internet to see more wonderful films and find more cultural background information about films. |
