Eric Rohmer Film Studies

Eric Rohmer is a prestigious French film director, in the "New Wave" film movement played a very important role. Thus, after the death of Andre Bazin, he served as "Film Guide" editor in chief. When people talk about the "New Wave", they will always mentioned his name after Truffaut, Godard and Rivette. However, he has only one pure "New wave" film——" Le Signe du Lion ".What really make him a master of film art is its film series after the "New Wave"——the "Moral Stories ", "Comedies and Proverbs" and " Four Seasons stories". On the one hand, he inherited the view of Bazin's realist film. In his film, He insisted on his moral theme, and the human mind as his analysis of the real object of his films are so real and profound; On the other hand, he followed the "New Wave" film techniques. In his life, he insisted on medium and small budget films, long lens, natural light, the same recording technology and other aesthetic means. In addition, Rohmer's characters dialogue is very unique, it makes Rohmer's film more deeply.This paper consists of four chapters, discusses the "Moral" theme, characters, narrative characteristics and audio-visual style. The first chapter analyzes the "Moral" connotation and the evolution of "Moral" theme; the second chapter is character classification by occupation and sex, and analysis of the social nature of its characters; the third chapter is to analyze the triangle relationship between characters, and narrative perspective and narrative time and space; the fourth chapter is the analysis of his unique style of realistic pictures and sound features.
