From the development of modernity to post-modernity, Zygmunt Bauman proposed the concept of strangers. He used the word to describe people who can not be classified. In the time of modernity, people seek order. Strangers are alternatives, and they are isolated. Behind this is dentity construction in society, its essence is to avoid and cover up contradictions. As a result, post-modernity is a reflection of modernity.Bauman believed that the stranger lives in the tension between certainty and uncertainty, and This reflects the plight of human existence. From view of the individual survival, on the one hand, the strangers tried to get well with the society, on the other hand, uncertainty determines that the strangers can only live alone. They can only survive with awkward posture and experience the root-free survival, that means, they will always live in uncertainties.Strangers gathered in the modern cities. Stranger can be divided into two categories: nostalgia and homesick. Nostalgia is the process to give meaning of hometown, and it is the worship of the appearance of peace. Homesickness has the meaningless freedom, and it pursues never stop roaming. Both the aesthetic spirits are attributed to uncertainty. Strangers and art have a natural connection. Avant-garde in art has a pioneering significance. However, the avant-garde art has the characteristics of dehumanization. post-modern art is the reflection of avant-garde art, but it also fells into the trap of consumer society. So, it's pursuit of modernity is ironic.
