| "The meaning between lines"and"the meaning behind images"are always emphasized in Chinese ancient literary theory, and the ploy of"use the blank as an integrated part of painting"is always the pursuit of all artists. It is also believed that there should be enough"vacancy and indeterminacy"in a good article to make the article possess the response-inviting structure (die appellstruktur) in western reception aesthetics theory, which could cause an interaction between the writer and the reader. However, the"blankness"theory in Chinese ancient aesthetics is a bit different from the"vacancy and indeterminacy"in western reception aesthetics, the key points, depth and breadth of them, are not exactly the same.Due to many differences between Chinese and western culture, such as cultural background, ideas and theory, angles of aesthetics, which may cause many obstacles and difficulties in translating Chinese poetry into English. Consequently, many losses happened in the process of the translation in different levels, such as in language level, literary level, culture level. Though many researchers at home and abroad have already taken the ploy of blankness in translating poetry, the statements they made are fragmentary and scattered. Based upon the above situation, the author manages to summarize the Chinese traditional aesthetic blankness and the western theory of vacancy and indeterminacy to analyze its application in translation, and to expound the its expressions and the strategy of its handling, and to demonstrate the influence to the standard of translation, so as to reproduce the beauty of the spirit and the form of the poem and reappear the conciseness and fuzziness of the original charm of the poetic language as close as possible On the basis of the Reception Aesthetics, the blankness strategy in Chinese traditional aesthetics is used to describe and analyze the English version of 300 Tang poems A New Translation translated by professor Xu Yuanzhong. It is described and analyzed how the blankness strategy used in poem translation by concrete translated examples from different levels of language, literature and culture, and the impact and value of blankness strategy to translation theory. The research mainly contains six parts. Part one is the general introduction to the study, including research background, research purpose, research questions, research methodology and research object. Part two is the literary review of the previous study on the blankness of the text and its representation in translation. Part three is the theoretical framework of Reception Theory put forward by Walfgang Iser and Robert Jauss, the horizon of expectation, vacancy and indeterminacy. The causes of the blankness used in poem translation are analyzed in part four. It is described and analyzed how to use blankness strategy in poem translation to recreate its potential meaning and images from different levels in part five. The last part is the conclusions and suggestions to Chinese ancient poetry translation criteria and practice. |
