A Study Of Xu Yuanchong’s Poetry Translation From The Perspective Of Aesthetics Of Reception

Translation is difficult; especially for literature translation. Poetry translation is a harder job to do. However, without poetry translation, no Chinese will learn anything about Home, nor Shakespeare. Poetry is the art of language and a golden treasury of national language. The classical Chinese poetry is a gem in the treasure house of Chinese literature. For a long time, many scholars, foreign or domestic, have been engaged in translating the classical Chinese poetry and made great contributions to introducing this immortal heritage of Chinese culture to the world. Professor Xu Yuanzhong has made remarkable contribution to Chinese poetry translation and has had far-reaching influence in the area. On the basis of his experiences of poetry translation, he sets forth’three-beauty’principle---’beauty in meaning, beauty in sound and beauty in form’on poetry translation which has aroused heated debate.The author of this thesis aims at a study of the rationality and feasibility of’three-beauty’principle from the perspective of aesthetics of reception. This thesis first generalizes the previous studies of Xu Yuanchong’s’three-beauty’principle and his translation practice at home and abroad. Then, this thesis analyzes the reproduction of three beauties in his translation practice from the perspective of aesthetics of reception. This thesis finds out that the aesthetics reception has close relation with three-beauty theory. Through the examples given in the thesis the author points out that it is true there exist some drawbacks in Xu Yuanzhong’s poetry translation practices. In the process of realizing three beauties, Xu did not totally conform to the standard of aesthetics reception and some of his translations are different from the meaning of the original poetry which makes the readers cannot get the same aesthetic feeling as the readers of the original poetry do. However, most of his poetry translations realized his own’three-beauty’ principle and achieved much success, which proves that’three-beauty’principle is rational and feasible in translation of poetry.
