Tourism English refers to a professional English course for Tourism Management majors about managing a travel agency or a restaurant, and conducting a tour apart from the Basic English course offered in higher vocational colleges. At present, there are some problems in the teaching of Tourism English in higher vocational colleges. For example, in the process of compiling teaching materials, people value the integrity of knowledge systems but lack the main idea of cultivating students'abilities; in the teaching design, people don't attach importance to such issues as ability training.In this thesis, the author develops a systematic research and reform on two aspects of the construction of teaching material and teaching pattern in the courses of Tourism English through combining the theory of task-based teaching approach with practical teaching of Tourism English.The author of the thesis first analyzes the future working posts of students majored in Tourism Management, sums up seven typical working situations, and maps out many learning themes for each scene, as well as corresponding capacity goals, knowledge and learning work tasks. Every theme is introduced by a real working task and requires students to experience and summarize through completing the task, draw conclusions and learn relevant knowledge to achieve teaching objectives. The thesis reconstructs the teaching contents based on the typical working tasks.In addition, the thesis carries out detailed designs of the classroom teaching for different themes of task. With task-based teaching approach as the guiding ideology, it establishes a basic framework for teaching, and illustrates the basic requirements and steps of teaching with true examples according to the three stages of pre-task, while-task and post-task. The thesis confirms learning goals and emphases of each theme, and gives organization programs, implementation plans and evaluation elements of each specific task link.Base on above theory research, the author conducts a Tourism English teaching experiment. The experiment lasts one semester and 70 second year students majoring in Tourism Management in Jiangsu Vocational and Technical Institute of Economics and Commerce are involved. The students are in two classes, which respectively adopt the traditional teaching approach and task-based teaching approach. In the experimental task-based teaching approach class, the author uses the new self-prepared teaching materials and new methods of teaching organization, and evaluates the effect of students'learning through combining the process and result. And the traditional teaching materials and approach are adopted in the control class. From effect of teaching and investigation information, one can see that curriculum reform has made significant progress in improving students'learning interest, professional knowledge and comprehensive ability, but it is slightly lower than the traditional teaching approach in the indicator of language basic knowledge. So it still needs teachers to strengthen guidance in teaching and help students adapt to the new teaching pattern to improve the independent learning ability.
