As the throat of the ancient Silk Road, Dunhuang served as the important position and key role in the communication between central China and the West. Since it bordered on the Western Regions and enjoyed convenience in traffic, Dunhuang accepted in the early period the Buddhist culture originated from India. During the Wei-Jin-Northern and Southern Dynasties (220—589A.D.), Dunhuang had been transformed into a famous Buddhist town. When it comes to the period of Return-to-Allegiance Army Regime (namely the late Tang, Five Dynasties and early Song,851—1036A.D.), Dunhuang Buddhism was still in a big prosperity and possessed its own characteristics.Because of the historical status of Dunhuang and traits of Dunhuang documents, academics have attained a good success on Dunhuang Buddhism. Based on this point, the paper targets monk officials' promotion of this period. First, it supplies the procedures for promotion with an example of Wuzhen, whose deeds is from an average monk to Dusengtong, the top leader of the entire Hexi Region. Furthermore, it concludes main factors of promotion:profound self-cultivation in Buddhism, family background, monks'lifespan, relationships between ordinary monks and eminent ones, and powers from monk groups. Last, being a monk official brings much more changes for himself in daily life. Meanwhile, all of this reveals the privileges in the monks and nuns.In conclusion, it indicates that making a further research on the history of Return-to-Allegiance Army Regime is necessary and applicable. But it should be set up on the serious textual research for Dunhuang documents and historical records.
