Research Into A Series Of Problems About The Tang Dynasty's Doulu Army And Yiwu Army

Tang Dynasty has a vast territory, facing formidable minority military forces from Tujue,Tubo and Huihe which lie in the northwest. Before The Changshou first year (692 A.D.), the military forces of Tang in the western region is limited, the management of western region by march army.In the Changshou first year,the garrison was replaced by march army.In the background, Doulu army and Yiwu army were located in Sha Zhou and Yiwu, which safeguarded domination of Tang Dynasty in western region powerfully.The essay is the discussion on foundation of predecessors'stuies about Doulu army and Yiwu army, with the help of documents from Turpan and Dunhuang .This essay contains four parts:The first part is a preface which introduces the general situations of Doulu army and Yiwu army as well as the predecessor's achievement of Doulu army and Yiwu army.The second part is the study of Doulu army's problems, which are mainly about the organizing time, the changes of nationality ingredients, the soldier quantity, the military appointment title ,from"Doulu army yin "to"Doulu army zhi yin". I infer that Doulu army was set up before the Zaichu first year(690 A.D.). The main body of Doulu army is Tuyuhun people. Because Tuyuhun people was Hanzified , Hanren became the body of Doulu army later. Originally,Doulu army has 4300 Soldiers, which became more and more with Tuyuhun people giving surrender to Tang Dynasty later .The military head of Doulu army was"Doulu army Jinglue shi"in Wuzhou times, in Kaiyuan times which was"Doulu army Shi"."Jun Shi"came into being before Kaiyuan times and Wuzhou times."Doulu army Bingma Shi"was the main head who not only charge rushing in the battle but also the affairs with other armies, which was a transitional title between"Doulu army Jinglue Shi"and"Doulu army Shi".The third part is the studies of Yiwu army's problems, which are mainly about the quantity of horses, the 14th document from the 506th tomb in Astana,the Fenghou of Yiwu army. I infer that Yiwu army was made up of Hu people in western region, which had 300 horses in the beginning and became more and more in Kaiyuan and Tianbao times. The7th,8th,14th,16th,18th,19th,20th,21th,23th,24th,25th,26th,27th and 28th document from the 506th tomb in Astana can be lined .Those documents were a disbursement of Xizhou and the salary was from Gongxieliqian. Because Fenghou was the frontier defence and the most keenness of frontier defence. It functioned as overlooking, fireworking and giving an alarm. The staffs were not authorized by government.The fourth part is a conclusion.As frontier forces in the western region, Doulu army and Yiwu army which were neighboring had a lot of common points. The research of Doulu army and Yiwu army have vital academics significance in garrison system and the national defense strategy of Tang Dynasty. Meanwhile, the research has the benefit regarding the local economy and culture.
