Breath, Eyes, Memory is Edwidge Danticat’s first novel, also is her beginning ofcreation making Haiti as the creation background. Breath, Eyes, Memory is one ofDanticat’s early works, this work is also the one almost made her famous overnight. The novel can be said to be the representative one of the Diaspora novel, parts of thearrangement of the novel is written according to Danticat’s own life experience, which described the oppressed Haiti women in patriarchal society, who suffered fromthe insulted pains by the men, as well as the tragic reality full of discrimination andexclusion after moving to the U.S. The thesis makes the heroines’ lives andexperiences as the main line, and introduces two generations of women’s growthprocess and changes, and it also describes the experience in Haiti and Haitian culture, and the impacts on women. The fact that women were insulted by m en makes womenlose the right to live a normal life; otherwise, male-dominated social and culturaltraditions make women much more depressed, losing themselves under that kind ofsituation, and the female characters in the foreign country to make the lives feel theimpact of foreign culture discrimination. In all, the novel leaves a wide space for acriticism of postcolonial-feminism.
