As a representative work in etymology, Wen Shi of Mr. Taiyan Zhang, studies etymology following sound, outlines the feature of word family in Chinese, and has many findings in the cognate phenomenon of words and expressions. He not only left rich cognate words corpus but also had great innovation in research methodologies and inspired subsequent scholars. As a result, Wen Shi is taken as the object of this study, and Mr. Zhang's characteristics of paronym study is concluded to show the etymology research value of Wen Shi through a comprehensive interpretation and in-depth discussion.Based the systemic theory of Chinese glossary and the interim theory of the Chinese glossary's emergence and accumulation, a comprehensive review of etymology views and sound change in Wen Shi is made in this thesis, and as a result, 164 groups of words highly representing Zhang's linguistics theory are concluded. In the introduction session, the countermarking version of Wen Shi published by Zhejiang Library is proposed to be studied using methodologies of depiction, sound change and meaning homology, parallel mutal-certificated, sememe analysis, and historical comparison. For the second chapter, the focus is the interpretations of Chuwen and quasi-Chuwen, changing and evolution multiples, and branches, and this thesis agrees that Chuwen and quasi-Chuwen are what Zhang calls"original words", changing and evolution multiples are intersected although there are schisms, and Zhang'"family"equals to subfamily in language. In order to figure out the phonetics basis of Zhang's etymology, Chapter 3 validates with Zhengzhang phonology system. Based on the above two chapters and the rhyme classes layout of Zhang's Wen Shi, an in-depth analysis of Zhang's cognate words is made from aspects of their sound and original meaning in Chapter 4. Conclusions of this study presented in Chapter 5 are as follows: 1. Zhang's word building method takes on an ideogram viewpoint of"Chinese word building level". 2. Zhang proposed two examples of changing and evolution multiples to illustrate the historical evolution types of Chinese characters which introduced Chinese character etymology to a longitudinal study history. 3. As the phonetics basis of constructing cognate words system in Wen Shi, Zhang's Chengjun Figure summarizes sound change works more broadly than other composings; however, there are exceptions in Wen Shi from Chenjun Figure. 4. The cognate word system constructed in Zhang's Wen Shi is generally credible. But it emphasizes"relating to source"instead of"source inferring", the practical value is higher than its theoretical value. At last, in Chapter 6, advantage and disadvantage of this research are concluded. The advantage is that the arrangement delivery, rules of the phonetic sound changes, and cognate words system of Zhang's Wen Shi are discussed in detail. The disadvantage lies in the incomprehensive and inexhaustive analysis of Zhang's cognate words system. In sum, as a representative work in etymology of Mr. Taiyan Zhang, Wen Shi is a basal work of modern etymology. The cognate word corpus in Wen Shi is worthy of our further study and rational use from which we can use the methodology on studying etymology.
